This 3-day OBX RV itinerary is built for travelers with a long weekend — typically Friday afternoon arrival through Monday departure. It hits the Northern Beaches highlights without trying to push all the way to Hatteras and back, which would burn the trip in driving time.
Where to Base
For a 3-day trip, base on the Northern OBX — Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, or Nags Head. The drive south to Hatteras Island is two hours each way and not worth the windshield time on a short trip. Good campground options:
- Kitty Hawk RV Park — full hookups, year-round, central
- OBX Campground — soundfront full hookups in Kill Devil Hills
- Oregon Inlet Campground — NPS, near Hatteras gateway
Day 1 — Arrival and Wright Brothers
Arrive at your campground by mid-afternoon. Set up, then head 10 minutes south to the Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kill Devil Hills — the visitor center, monument, and reconstruction of the first flight site take about 90 minutes. Dinner at one of the Kill Devil Hills classics: Outer Banks Brewing Station, Awful Arthur’s Oyster Bar, or Tortugas’ Lie. Sunset on the beach.
Day 2 — Beach Day and Jockey’s Ridge
Spend the morning at the beach — public access points along Beach Road in Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head are easy and free. After lunch, head to Jockey’s Ridge State Park in Nags Head. The largest natural sand dune system on the East Coast, you can hike the dunes, sandboard (rentals nearby), or take a hang-gliding lesson at Kitty Hawk Kites at the base of the dunes. Late afternoon: drive up to Currituck Heritage Park in Corolla to see the Whalehead Club and the Currituck Beach Lighthouse.
Day 3 — Bodie Island and Departure
Morning: drive south to Bodie Island Lighthouse (15 minutes south of Nags Head, just before the Marc Basnight Bridge). Climb if it’s open seasonally; the visitor center has an excellent boardwalk through marsh. Stop for lunch in Nags Head, pack up the rig, and head home.
Optional Add-Ons
- Carova wild horses: Half-day 4×4 tour to see the wild Spanish mustangs in Carova (you’ll need a 4×4 — book a guided tour or rent locally)
- Hang gliding: Kitty Hawk Kites runs beginner lessons at Jockey’s Ridge
- Kayaking: Roanoke Sound or Currituck Sound — easy launches and calm water
What to Skip on a 3-Day Trip
- Hatteras Lighthouse — too far south for a long weekend
- Ocracoke — needs at least 2 nights to be worthwhile
- Cape Point fishing — requires 4×4 and a full day commitment
