Practical services for Outer Banks RV travelers — from 4×4 rentals for beach access, to dump stations, propane refills, and RV-friendly groceries. The Outer Banks is a long, narrow stretch of barrier islands, so knowing where to find services in advance saves real time on your trip.

4×4 rentals for OBX beach access

4×4 rental is the most-needed service for OBX RVers since RVs can’t drive on the sand. Beach4x4.com is one local outfitter with campground delivery.

Dump stations & potable water

Most private campgrounds offer dump stations to registered guests. NPS campgrounds (Oregon Inlet, Cape Point, Frisco, Ocracoke) have public dump stations open during camping season for a small fee even if you’re not staying there. Camp Hatteras and Cape Hatteras KOA also have public dump access. The Hookups & Utilities guide breaks down what each park offers.

Propane & RV supplies

Tractor Supply in Kill Devil Hills, Ace Hardware locations in Nags Head and Avon, and most major campground offices sell propane refills. For larger RV parts and supplies, the closest dealerships are inland on the mainland in Elizabeth City and Williamston — plan ahead before your trip rather than expecting to source major parts on-island.

Groceries & ice

Full-service grocery is concentrated in the Northern OBX (Harris Teeter and Food Lion in Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, and Nags Head) and at the Avon Food Lion on Hatteras Island. South of Avon, options thin out quickly — stock up before heading to Frisco, Hatteras Village, or Ocracoke. Ice is available at every campground office and most gas stations.

Mobile RV repair

OBX has a small but capable network of mobile RV technicians who service the campgrounds. Most campground offices keep a list of recommended repair contacts. For anything beyond an electrical or plumbing fix, the closest dealer service is typically Elizabeth City or Greenville on the mainland — budget a half-day round trip if you need dealer-level work.

OBX RV Services FAQ

Is there a propane refill station on the Outer Banks? Yes — several hardware stores and gas stations on the OBX offer propane exchange and refill. AmeriGas exchange cages are at Food Lion locations in Nags Head and Avon. For refills (cheaper per gallon), check local hardware stores in Manteo and Buxton.

Where can I dump my RV tanks on the Outer Banks? Oregon Inlet Campground has a dump station available to non-campers for a small fee. Most private OBX RV parks have on-site sewer hookups or dump stations for registered guests. The NPS campgrounds at Cape Point, Frisco, and Ocracoke do not have sewer hookups — plan accordingly for longer stays.

Is there a Camping World or RV parts store on the Outer Banks? No national RV parts chain exists on the Outer Banks. The nearest Camping World is in the Virginia Beach / Chesapeake area. For emergency RV supplies, AutoZone and Advance Auto in Nags Head carry basic parts. Mobile RV repair technicians operate across the OBX — see the listings above for current contacts.
