Canadian Hole Hatteras: East Coast Windsurfing & Kite Capital

Canadian Hole — officially the Haulover Day Use Area on Hatteras Island — is the most famous windsurfing and kiteboarding spot on the East Coast and one of the top five wind-sports venues in the world. A sandy launch directly into shallow, flat Pamlico Sound, reliable thermal and frontal wind, NPS-managed parking and restrooms, and an international wind-sports legacy dating back to the 1980s. This guide covers everything visitors need: where it is, how to get there, when to go, what to expect, and where to camp within walking distance.

Where Is Canadian Hole?

Canadian Hole is the Haulover Day Use Area on the sound (west) side of NC-12 between Avon and Buxton on Hatteras Island, North Carolina, inside Cape Hatteras National Seashore. The pull-off has a paved parking lot for about 60 vehicles, NPS porta-johns, an outdoor rinse shower in season, and a 100-yard sandy walk from the lot to the water. There is no entry fee.

The spot earned its name in the late 1970s and 1980s when Canadian windsurfers began driving down the East Coast each spring and fall to ride the consistent wind. The name stuck. Today the parking lot license plates still skew north of the border every shoulder season.

Why Canadian Hole Is World-Class

  • Shallow flatwater — Waist-to-chest-deep water extends a half mile out, forgiving for learners and ideal for freestyle and freeride.
  • Wind from any direction except due east — The geometry of the Sound and barrier island means north, northeast, east-northeast, south, southwest, and west winds all work.
  • Thermal-plus-frontal wind pattern — Steady summer southwest thermals (15–22 knots) and bigger spring and fall frontal northeasters (20–35 knots) deliver 200+ rideable days per year.
  • Sandy bottom — No rocks, no major shellfish hazards. Booties recommended but not required.
  • NPS-managed access — Restrooms, trash, and a maintained launch path. No fees, no permits.

When to Go: Wind by Season at Canadian Hole

  • Spring (March–May): The connoisseur season. Frontal systems alternate with thermal days. Wind 15–25 knots. Water 55–65°F (4/3 wetsuit). Smaller crowds, the best mix of strong wind and rideable temps.
  • Summer (June–August): Reliable southwest thermal almost every afternoon, 15–22 knots. Water 75–82°F. Board shorts. The most beginner-friendly and family-friendly season.
  • Fall (September–November): Tropical systems and early nor’easters drive the biggest wind of the year, 18–35 knots. Water still 60s into late October. The pro season.
  • Winter (December–February): Huge frontal winds 25–40 knots, water in the 40s. Full 5/4 wetsuit with hood, gloves, and boots. Sparse crowds. Big-air storm-chasing only.

What to Expect on a Typical Day

On a strong summer thermal day the lot fills by 11 AM and rigs sprawl across the launch zone. Kiters set up on the south end, windsurfers and wing foilers spread across the middle and north. The water is alive by noon with riders ranging from learners doing waist-deep body drags to pros throwing big air a quarter mile downwind. Sessions wind down at sundown as the thermal dies. The on-water vibe is one of the friendliest in wind sports — Canadian Hole regulars look out for each other.

Canadian Hole vs Other Hatteras Kite Spots

Canadian Hole is the iconic spot but Hatteras has half a dozen world-class launches. Kite Point in Salvo offers cleaner water on a southwest thermal and smaller crowds. Real Watersports / Waves has the largest kite school in the US plus dedicated downwinder logistics. Frisco Sound delivers the deepest flatwater stretch for big-air sessions. Many kiters cycle between three or four spots in a single trip depending on wind direction. See our full Hatteras kiteboarding guide for the complete spot lineup.

Lessons, Rentals, and Gear

No shops operate directly out of the Canadian Hole parking lot — the spot is undeveloped NPS land. Lessons and rentals run from Real Watersports in Waves (25 minutes north) and from kite and windsurf shops in Avon (5 minutes north) and Buxton (10 minutes south). Most schools offer shuttle service to Canadian Hole when wind direction favors the spot.

Etiquette and Safety

  • Set up upwind of riders launching and landing — never block the downwind corridor.
  • Kiters: yield to windsurfers and wing foilers in the launch zone. They yield to you once everyone is out and riding.
  • Check your lines and bar before every session. Salt and sand kill kite gear faster here than almost anywhere.
  • Carry a knife and self-rescue tools. Help is usually 100 yards away but always be self-sufficient.
  • Lightning safety: afternoon thunderstorms build fast on the OBX. Off the water at the first rumble.
