Hatteras Island is the long, narrow barrier island that runs from the south side of Oregon Inlet down to Hatteras Inlet, ending at the ferry to Ocracoke. It’s the heart of the Outer Banks RV camping scene: every major NPS campground except Ocracoke sits here, both of the big private resorts (KOA in Rodanthe and Camp Hatteras at MP 40.5) are here, and the iconic Cape Hatteras Lighthouse in Buxton is the geographic and cultural anchor of the whole island.

This is the master hub guide to RV camping on Hatteras Island — every village, every campground, every practical reality of the drive south from the Marc Basnight Bridge to Hatteras village. The deeper pieces on individual campgrounds and villages are linked throughout.

Hatteras Island geography for RV travelers

Hatteras Island is roughly 50 miles long and never more than two miles wide. NC-12 is the single road running its length, two-lane the entire way. From north to south, the villages and major landmarks in order:

  • Oregon Inlet — the inlet itself, the Marc Basnight Bridge, the Oregon Inlet Fishing Center, and Oregon Inlet Campground (NPS, 116 sites, hookups available)
  • Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge — 12+ miles of undeveloped barrier island, paved bike path, free access
  • Rodanthe — northernmost Tri-Village, home of Cape Hatteras / OBX KOA Resort, the Rodanthe Pier, and Mirlo Beach
  • Waves — middle Tri-Village, home of Real Watersports for kiteboarding
  • Salvo — southernmost Tri-Village, smallest of the three, primarily residential
  • Avon — the largest village on Hatteras Island, full-service grocery (Food Lion, Conner’s), restaurants, RV parts shops
  • Buxton — home of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, Cape Point, Cape Point Campground (NPS)
  • Frisco — home of Frisco Campground (NPS) and Frisco Woods Campground (private)
  • Hatteras village — the southern end of Hatteras Island, home of the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum and the ferry terminal to Ocracoke

How to choose your village base

Stay in Rodanthe or the Tri-Villages if…

You’re a first-time visitor, you have kids who want a pool, you want walk-distance amenities (restaurants, surf shops, the Rodanthe Pier), and you want a 30-minute drive to full-service grocery in Nags Head as your fallback. The KOA Resort and Camp Hatteras both anchor this section.

Stay in Avon if…

You want the most balanced full-service village on Hatteras Island. Avon has the only full-service grocery cluster on the island (Food Lion, Conner’s), restaurants, RV parts, propane refill, and a strong middle position on the island — 25 minutes from Rodanthe in the north, 15 minutes from the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse in the south. Private campgrounds in Avon vary; check current operations.

Stay in Buxton if…

You want to dry-camp at Cape Point Campground (the biggest big-rig dry-camp inventory on the OBX with 137 sites at 45+ ft), you’re here for the surf fishing at the Point itself, or you want to be next door to the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. Trade-off: groceries are 15 minutes north in Avon.

Stay in Frisco if…

You want the most scenic NPS campground on the OBX (Frisco Campground is nestled among sand dunes with boardwalks to the beach) or you want quieter, more remote camping than Buxton. Trade-off: even further from groceries.

Stay in Hatteras village if…

You’re catching an early ferry to Ocracoke, you’re going offshore fishing on a charter boat, or you want the southernmost-village experience. The Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum is here. Trade-off: smaller community, fewer amenities, longer drives to anything north.

Driving Hatteras Island with an RV

NC-12 is two-lane the entire length of Hatteras Island. The Marc Basnight Bridge is rated for full highway traffic; no length restriction for typical RVs. The most weather-vulnerable stretches of NC-12 are at Mirlo Beach just north of the KOA Resort (overwash risk during nor’easters and tropical systems) and the stretches between villages where dunes thin out. Check NC-12 status at ncdot.gov/travel-maps before driving, especially during storm season.

Speed limits on NC-12 are 55 mph in most stretches, dropping to 35 or 45 in villages. The villages enforce — the Tri-Villages and Avon are particular about RV speeding because the speed cameras and patrol density are higher.

Hurricane and tropical-system considerations

Hatteras Island sits in the most exposed tropical-system corridor on the U.S. East Coast outside of the Florida Keys. Hurricane season runs June through November with peak activity August through October. Mandatory evacuations are issued by Dare County and Hyde County for major systems and typically include all of Hatteras Island. If you’re camping during hurricane season, watch the National Weather Service Newport/Morehead City office (weather.gov/mhx), build a 48-hour evacuation buffer into your plans, and be willing to leave a day or two early.

RVs evacuate easier than tent campers do — the rig is a mobile asset — but the bridges and ferries back up significantly during evacuation orders. Plan your route in advance and avoid waiting until the last hour.

Frequently asked questions

How many campgrounds are on Hatteras Island?

Three NPS campgrounds (Oregon Inlet, Cape Point, Frisco), two major private resorts (Cape Hatteras / OBX KOA Resort, Camp Hatteras RV Resort), and several smaller private campgrounds (North Beach, Ocean Waves, Frisco Woods, plus others). The total is approximately 8–10 active campgrounds depending on current operations.

Which village on Hatteras Island is best for RV camping?

Rodanthe is the easiest for first-time visitors (KOA Resort, restaurants, walking-distance amenities). Avon is the most balanced (full-service grocery, central position). Buxton is best for serious dry-camp big-rig owners at Cape Point. Each fits a different trip type.

How long is the drive from Oregon Inlet to Hatteras village?

About 50 miles on NC-12, roughly 75–90 minutes of driving depending on village speed-limit zones and seasonal traffic. The drive is two-lane the entire way with no alternate routes.

Can I drive a 40-foot RV the length of Hatteras Island?

Yes. NC-12 is rated for standard highway traffic including 45-foot motorhomes and 40-foot fifth wheels. The two-lane road is sometimes narrow in villages — stay center-of-lane and slow down through the Tri-Villages, Avon, Buxton, and Hatteras village.

What’s the closest town with full-service grocery on Hatteras Island?

Avon. Food Lion and Conner’s are the two main supermarkets, both at the village core on NC-12. North of Avon, the closest is in Nags Head (30+ minutes north of the KOA Resort).
